practical information about the west village
law enforcement
The West Village is patrolled by the NYPD 6th Precinct at 233 West 10th Street. In 2010, Precinct 6 was ranked 68th safest out of 69 patrol areas in terms of crime per capita. This is due to the high incidence of property crime. The 6th Precinct's crime rate is lower than it was in the 1990s, with all categories of crime declining. It increased by 80.6% between 1990 and 2018. The department reported 1 murder, 20 rapes, 153 robberies, 121 felony assaults, 163 robberies, 1,031 grand thefts, and 28 grand thefts of motor vehicles in 2018.
The Meatpacking District at the northern end of the district, also known as the 'Gansevoort Historic District', is filled with trendy boutiques and nightclubs. It is also the site of the highest concentration of large-scale thefts in the region. (New York grand robbery is legally defined as the theft of property worth $1,000 or more, or the taking of property from another person without the threat of force.) In February 2013, the NYPD 6th Precinct Distributed 3,500 leaflets to bars and clubs in the city to warn people. Police said the crimes mostly occurred in meat processing districts between 11pm and 11pm. until 3am.
